A Journey to Motherhood: Dr. Christopher Barley Aatmiya Community Hospital

At Dr. Christopher Barley Aatmiya Community Hospital, we recently had the privilege of assisting Ms. Anita Karki, a 23-year-old pregnant mother from Sunkoshi Rural Municipality -07, Gairigaun. This was her first pregnancy, and her journey to motherhood was a testament to her strength and perseverance.

Ms. Karki’s expected delivery date, as calculated by our health personnel, was February 18, 2021. However, as that date came and went without any signs of labor, anticipation and anxiety began to build. It wasn’t until February 26, 2021, that Ms. Karki began experiencing labor pains. Despite the initial discomfort, she and her family chose to wait at home, hoping the pain would intensify. By the following day, February 27, 2021, the pain had grown more pronounced, prompting her family to embark on a challenging 2.5-hour off-road journey to reach our hospital.

Upon arrival, Ms. Karki was admitted to the antenatal care (ANC) unit. She was experiencing moderate pain, and although everything appeared normal, it was clear that she was exhausted. She hadn’t slept well in days and had lost her appetite, leaving her physically drained.

After two hours in the ANC, we moved her to the delivery room. Despite her determination, Ms. Karki struggled to muster the energy needed for effective bearing down efforts. For two hours, she pushed with all her might, but fatigue was taking its toll. Recognizing the need for additional support, our dedicated duty doctor, Dr. Atul Gautam, and our diligent duty nurse decided to perform an episiotomy and apply fundal pressure to assist in the delivery.

After 15 intense minutes of combined effort, Ms. Karki gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Initially, the baby did not cry and had aspirated meconium while in the womb. We immediately suctioned her airways and stimulated her breathing. After two tense minutes, the baby’s cries filled the room, a joyous sound that marked the beginning of her life.

Both mother and baby were kept under close observation for the next 24 hours. Their resilience and determination paid off as their health remained stable and strong. On February 28, 2021, we had the pleasure of discharging Ms. Karki and her newborn daughter, both in good health.

This case highlights not only the challenges and uncertainties that can accompany childbirth but also the strength of a mother’s love and the critical support a dedicated medical team provides. At Dr. Christopher Aatmiya Community Hospital, we are honored to be a part of such life-changing moments and remain committed to ensuring the health and well-being of our community.
